I’m Jon DeHart. I write about travel, culture, and society across Asia. I’m the author of two first-edition Japan guidebooks for Moon Travel Guides and a journalist with more than 500 published articles. My work has appeared in publications including Vice and Travel + Leisure, and my reporting for The Diplomat has been selected for “best of the web” lists by The Washington Post, The Atlantic, The Huffington Post, Foreign Policy, and RealClearWorld. I’ve worked as an editor for The Diplomat, as well as for international newswires and a monthly print magazine. Besides writing, I provide travel consulting and interpret behavioral trends for cultural insights agencies.

Books

My two first-edition guidebooks, published by Moon Travel Guides, cover the length of Japan, from sights and culinary highlights to nightlife, performance arts, accommodations and the outdoors.

Writing

I’ve written extensively about travel, culture and social trends in Asia for numerous publications, both in print and online. I also write in-depth reports for behavioral insights and cultural consulting agencies.

Trip Design

Drawing on insights gleaned through researching and writing two first-edition Japan guidebooks, I craft one-off itineraries for savvy, adventurous travelers keen to veer off the country’s beaten path.
